lithi keeps thinking that people will stop surprising him. that he's seen what they have to offer, and he can keep going with a working theory. but people are worse than particles, even particles now that magic has fucked the whole game. people keep doing something new. like aaren, attaching herself to lithi for absolutely no reason that he can see. she's not the first to follow him into the woods, no.

there was bren, soft hearted and timid, thrown in when lithi accidentally saved him from a cult kidnapping they'd both got caught in. sully, caught out in an airship crash, the only other survivor. xeo, almost more oversexed than lithi and sick with it, withering away at his side. he'd been those people's last chance, the only one around, a coincidence.

reyhe, who tracked him down after he got her pregnant (how many more, how many poor bastards can claim lithi's blood? lithi tries not to think about it; it makes him feel all cold and nauseous inside). years of his life, people who stuck around for one reason or another, and he's caught unprepared for each new one, even though he'd think by now it would be routine.

usually, they last as long as it takes for lithi to scare them away, either on purpose or accidentally. he hurts them one (or many) times too many, and they're gone.

"how am i supposed to tell if i'm feeling someone else's emotions?" aaren used to ask her mother when she was very young.

"you'll be able to tell," her mother said. "it should be obvious."

aaren used to pout about that, because she wasn't expressing magic from birth, the way full-blood elves did, but instead the human way, getting more powerful and sensitive as she got older, and she'd used to feel very slow and sloppy and left out and wrong.

"i don't think i can tell," aaren used to say. "all the emotions i'm feeling feel like mine."

"they might be, then," her mother said, and, still infuriatingly cryptic, "you'd be able to tell."

nobody actually likes trading with cults. they're hard to find, hard to talk to, hard to understand if you're not also a cultist. and they have a tendency to not actually have whatever trade tender they've promised. getting paid is sometimes thrice the hassle of the shipping.

so it's not like eris actually liked anybody here. but something sends a chill up her spine when they knock on the hidden door to the cave these guys camp out in and complete silence continues to reign.

there are no monsters about.

the cult usually lets them run wild, way too close to their home base if you ask eris. it shouldn't be this quiet. someone should have let them in, immediately, because it should be fucking dangerous to linger out here.

statement of joseph martinez, about an encounter with a pop-up restaurant in eugene, oregon.

statement begins:

i work in food. a bit snobby about it, if i'm being honest. my mother is a wonderful chef, and i remember the first time i stayed for dinner at a friends house, how i was so surprised and dismayed at the unseasoned chicken and limp salad that was all that was on offer. i didn't eat much that night; just enough to cover an eight-year-old's understanding of "enough to be polite."

my girlfriend, anna coleman, had just broken up with me that week, so my friends kyle reyes, chris easton, and tia ellis had demanded i go out with them, to take my mind off it. anna had just said that i was "too much of a doormat," for her, so i thought, what the hell, why not prove her right. i said okay, and that's how i ended up bar-hopping on a weekday night.

==> be the subjugglator troll again

you didn’t actually volunteer to be here for this long to bother labrynth, no matter how hilarious he is. no, your best hatefriend aneris recently got transferred to this ship and promoted and you haven’t gotten to see her in person since you met her, pretty much. she’d still been in training, then, and now she’s already a captain of a warship while you’re, uh. still under review for leading a squad. that’s okay, though. aneris is much more of a leader than you are, anyway; she actually has interests and ambitions other than poking things with sticks. (big. heavy. iron. sticks. the better to beat some heads in if you have to!) really you just ran into labrynth first by chance.

when he finally scrapes you off, you wander off to find aneris. this proves harder than one might think, probably because the rapprochement carries easily thirty thousand trolls, and its admiral insists on a much greater deal of integration than most. so you can’t, for instance, just go find the warmblood living quarters. why do they gotta make a girl’s life so hard?

you give up after an hour of wandering down corridors and making people nervous.

rude, honestly. you’ve been messaging him every time you remember to for the past, like, sweep and a half.

on the other hand, he did recognize you on sight, which is kind of flattering. you’ve forgotten more trolls than you’ve laid ganderbulbs on, probably. but you suppose you do stand out. most trolls still lump you into a class labeled “subjugglator” or “clown” with zero personal data attached, though, which is as it should be.

“awww, labrynth,” you croon, forgoing traditional address in favor of not spending your first several hours here engaged in brisk strifing. "and me having volunteered to get stuck here personal and all!”

your name is aaeren sindra, and you and yours have a job to do and fast to do it. you've been given your pick of ships on the rapprochement (the fuck kind of name is that, anyway. the empire's going so strange outside the ranks of the subjugglators and the history they continue to teach untouched by propaganda from her complacency's gentler reign). it's not what you would prefer, but your ship's disabled for the minute and this is what you have until the rapprochement gets you back with your own. and there's things to do as don't wait for what you'd like.

"that one," you say, pointing lazily at one of the warships in the upper deck with the iron bar held loosely in your fingers. you can't say what drew your eye to that one, in particular, except that there's something familiar about it among the rest of these sterile spacefighting vessels. "tell whoever you need to, i need it crewed and ready to take us down to that planet sharpish," you say, and the big tealblood sort of squeaks in dismay in a way that cheers you right up.

flare doesn’t like this moon. there’s something strange about it in the force, something that glows warmly, something– there’s something she has to find.

no

that’s not her job anymore, she doesn’t have to find anything if she doesn’t want to. doesn’t have to track down this disturbance to the (likely very powerful) force-sensitive to hand over to her masters. she doesn’t have masters any more.

so she stays in her cabin and takes sweet'n'sour apart for the. how many times is it now? it doesn’t matter. she’s making him better. she might have pulled him out of an imperial refuse pile and he might still be rusty and battered and patched together but he has quickly become the only one she can trust. when sweet'n'sour talks to the other droids on the ship, flare knows they’re telling the truth. they always lie to her. people are easier. people she can just reach into their heads and see.

except. yes. she has to be more careful about that. that’s the reason they have to be on this moon, because they need more people. because flare wasn’t careful and they– are all so weak, so fragile, most of them have no shields to speak of, she doesn’t have to press so hard. yes.

brass’s cantina is the place to go on this moon if you’re looking for work with few questions attached, according to the locals. kiorae and kaeon have been hanging out at brass’s afternoons and some evenings for a week, with nothing yet to show for it. it’s not like kiorae’s not used to sleeping in alleyways (running away from home at fourteen is a great way to become a very quick study at that, in this galaxy), but it’s been better since she met kaeon, usually. they’ve just had a streak of bad luck lately, which was how they ended up stranded here without even the price of a room in their pockets in the first place.

there’s an imperial warship docked here right now, too; broke atmo just yesterday, and that’s making kaeon even jumpier, which makes him a pain to live with. kiorae’s never seen him quite like this, though: twitchy and glancing around constantly like he expects to be jumped in their dark corner of the cantina.

the inquisitor marches back onto the ship from the base at ord mantell, not quite acknowledging vyrr’s salute. they stand at the top of the still-open boarding ramp, circling around in slow, tight motions, as though surrounded in combat, perhaps, and then finally reach up and drag their helmet slowly off.

vyrr almost chokes on her surprise. in the two months since the raider corvette oblivion had been assigned to serve the inquisitor, vyrr has never seen them sans any part of their gleaming, chitinous black armor with its emblazoned white imperial cogs. she’d sort of thought that perhaps inquisitors were sort of like the gen dai, that the armor was somehow necessary as part of their form or something. it’s not like vyrr has ever met any other inquisitors– if, indeed, there are any others. that information has always been a bit fuzzy, probably purposefully.

there’s something almost ironic about having a name like “aurora” in the neath. acantha supposes she could change it back– it’d used to be “arora” some generations ago, but they’d anglicized it when the family moved to britain– but it’s too delightfully inappropriate, down here where there are no stars.

acantha thinks she’s done fairly well for herself, honestly. she has many acquaintances if few friends. there was that nasty business with aunt ritika, right after she’d moved down, but the letters asking after her have mostly stopped, even. (this might have more to do with acantha changing addresses without taking the trouble to inform surface relatives than with anyone actually ceasing inquiries into aunt ritika’s mysterious disappearance.) it’s not like she’s wildly successful, she’s not fooling herself. she lives above a shop in veilgarden; not precisely glamorous. she writes trash on commission for a living.

it’s also nice because vaska is warm as hell and it’s getting cold lately, which makes the caverns seem damp and draftier than before.

it hadn’t taken thomas long to figure out that the hidden bar under mamma gkika’s served as some sort of infirmary, mostly. the cast of jӓgermonsters is ever-shifting, and sometimes there are more than other times. thomas would be lying to herself if she didn’t say that she was kind of keeping an eye out for one in particular, but mostly she just keeps going because it. feels different, down there, like a place out of time. the girls upstairs all know thomas, now. mamma sends her a sharp, too-knowing smile sometimes when she catches sight of thomas. thomas doesn’t know what that smile knows.

the boys don’t come with her much anymore. kastor said that it feels like he’s not supposed to be there. thomas can’t understand that. there’s something down there that feels like the key to what she’s been missing all her life.

oh, sure, some of the neighboring lords have been getting uppity, and it wouldn’t do to leave the town visibly unmanned, but that’s beside the point.

the point is…

the point is that oggie’s squad has been drinking since yesterday afternoon, all right.
